Adoption Frequently Asked Questions
-
We’re so excited to help you find your new companion! Start by completing our adoption survey. Once we receive it, a team member will contact you to discuss any concerns, answer questions, and learn more about what you’re looking for. When a match is made, we begin with a two-week trial adoption to ensure everyone is comfortable and happy with the arrangement. To finalize your adoption, we’ll collect the adoption fee and have you sign our adoption agreement.

Our adoptable pets come from six regional shelters—including Marfa, Pecos, Presidio, and Van Horn—as well as several shelterless communities across the Big Bend region. We serve a nine-county area nearly the size of South Carolina, rescuing and rehoming pets from a wide range of environments.
-
This can vary depending on the pet’s needs, but most spend about 3 weeks in foster care while completing their vetting and settling into home life. This time also helps us learn their personalities so we can make the best match possible.
-
Absolutely! We love for potential adopters to meet their future family members. Meetings are arranged through the pet’s foster family or at one of our adoption events. Just let us know who you’d like to meet, and we’ll coordinate the details.scription
-
After submitting your adoption survey, you can expect to hear from an OTAT–West Texas team member within a few days. Depending on the pet’s availability, your adoption process could begin shortly after that first conversation!
-
Our adoption fee is $150 per pet, which helps cover the cost of wellness exam, spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccines, heartworm and tick disease testing, deworming, and microchip. We also offer a discounted fee of $200 when adopting two kittens together. Your adoption fee supports not only your new pet’s care but also future rescues. Additional donations are always appreciated—thank you for helping us continue this work!
-
We understand that finances can be challenging. A limited number of reduced or sponsored adoptions are available. Please reach out—we’re happy to talk through options.
-
Every adoption includes a healthy, well-assessed rescue companion who is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. You’ll receive all medical records upon finalization. Your adoption also includes our support, as needed, for the life of your new pet. We also offer access to discounted DNA testing through our partnership with Embark!

Each pet is unique, so the best match depends on their individual needs. In general, we look for adopters who will welcome their pet as a cherished family member, provide proper care, and treat them with kindness, patience, and compassion. Our goal is to help you find a pet who truly fits your home and lifestyle.
-
Yes! Many of our pets thrive in all kinds of homes. Each situation is considered individually so we can find a great match based on your living setup, experience, and resident family members (human or animal). We’re here to help make the right connection.
-
No—you don’t! While many adopters live in or near West Texas, we welcome adopters from across the country. We’re happy to help coordinate travel or transport details when needed.
-
We commit to every pet for life. If an adoption isn’t working out, we’ll start by scheduling a conversation to understand what’s going on. Often, we can offer training support or behavioral advice to help you and your pet succeed together. If returning the pet is the best option, we will almost always take them back. Depending on the situation, we may ask for a brief trainer consult, a vet visit, or other steps to ensure a smooth transition back into our program. Our goal is always the pet’s safety and long-term wellbeing.
